Closing the Bones Ritual

in Aljezur, Algarve

Closing the Bones is a deeply nurturing women’s ritual inspired by traditional postpartum practices from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Traditionally offered after childbirth, the ceremony uses warmth, massage, herbal bathing and rebozo wrapping to honour the body after pregnancy and birth and create a sense of grounding, rest and reconnection.

The ritual begins with a warm herbal bath or herbal cleansing, allowing the body to soften and settle. Nourishing oils and gentle abdominal and postpartum massage are then used to bring awareness back to the womb, pelvis and abdomen. Traditional cloth or rebozo techniques may include gentle rocking and wrapping of different areas of the body, creating a comforting feeling of being held and gathered inward.

Although traditionally associated with the postpartum period, Closing the Bones can also be a meaningful ceremony after miscarriage, pregnancy loss or abortion, offering a quiet space to acknowledge an experience and reconnect with the body.

The ritual can also be received during other important life transitions — including menopause, grief, the end of a relationship, emotional change or simply a time when you feel called to close one chapter before beginning another.

Closing the Bones is not about rushing the body towards a particular outcome. It is an invitation to slow down, receive nurturing touch and honour everything the body has carried.

A gentle ceremony of herbal bathing, massage, wrapping and rest, creating space to gather your energy inward, reconnect with yourself and step consciously into what comes next.

This ritual can take up to 3 hours and can be at your home or here at bodywisdom.
